Where Fantasy and Business Meet

More than 30 years ago, I published my first book. It was called 54 Approaches to Brickwall Management, using the brick wall as a metaphor for the resistance people often encounter when trying to bring about change in organisations.

The book was illustrated by a young neighbour, Rebecca, and to my surprise it travelled much further than I ever expected. It was serialised in a Hong Kong newspaper and used by management consultants as a resource for workshops on change management. Over the years, feedback from readers helped shape new editions, leading eventually to the fourth edition, now published as 54 Ways to Work with Change.

Looking back, I find it interesting that although my writing now includes fantasy adventures for children, the themes are not as different as they first appear. Whether writing about organisational change, personal growth or the adventures of the Fearless Trio, I am still exploring how people respond to challenge, uncertainty, courage, friendship and change itself.

This weekend I was reminded of the value of those connections while attending our local summer carnival. I sold around thirty books, enjoyed some wonderful conversations, and received invitations to speak to local community groups about my writing. Meeting readers face to face is always one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

I am also delighted that Simple Truths, one of my most successful books, has recently been relaunched. The book was previously recommended by Bel Mooney in the Mail on Sunday and included as a resource for Personal and Social Education within the National Curriculum.

From business writing to fantasy adventures, from leadership to wellbeing, it has been an unexpected and rewarding journey. Thank you to everyone who has read, supported, encouraged and shared these books along the way. The journey continues.
