Psychiatric Nursing Skills: A Patient-Centred Approach

Originally written by Dr Graham Dexter and Michael Wash, Psychiatric Nursing Skills, A Patient-Centred Approach grew from a period of major change in mental-health nursing.

This new digital edition preserves its historical contribution while asking which of its central principles, particularly person-centred care, therapeutic relationships and the skills of psychiatric nursing, still have relevance for practice today.

This is not presented as a current clinical manual. It is a legacy text. Some parts belong clearly to the period in which it was written, but the emphasis on listening, relationship, dignity, self-awareness and patient-centred care remains relevant to practice today.

Chapters include:

  • Personal skills

  • Counselling skills

  • Supervision

  • Working with anxious people

  • Working with depressed people

  • Working with people experiencing hallucinations

  • Working with people expressing aggression in residential settings

  • Community skills

  • Creative approaches

  • Working with groups
